Jax became the largest city by land area in the contiguous United States, and one of the country's ten consolidated governments. Signs were erected stating that Jax was the “bold new city in the south.” Bold new city in the South, City on the Move, Gateway to Florida, First Coast, River City, whatever the nickname, Jacksonville is the place to be. In the early days, the steep bend where the wide expanse of the St. Johns, which flows to the north, sharply changes its course eastward to the Atlantic Ocean, it was simply called Cowford, the narrowest part of the river that allowed cattle to cross on the way to the market.

Jacksonville's financial sector has benefited from a rapidly changing business culture, as have other Sunbelt cities, such as Atlanta, Tampa and Charlotte.
Perhaps it was the consolidation of Duval County into the big city of Jacksonville in 1966, which made it the largest city in the world, at least in terms of area.
